The NSLS News
Letter from the President
Dear NSLS Member,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Welcome back to a brand-new year of possibilities, opportunities … and accountability.
This is the month where most people set goals for years to come, and accountability is a great foundation for keeping promises to yourself and others.
Have you ever heard of the expression, “The buck stops here?” It refers to taking responsibility for the plans and actions that occur under your watch. Being accountable is one of the most admirable traits of an effective leader.
Accountability can be intimidating for some, especially in team situations where more people means there are more personalities to manage. With this in mind, remember solid leadership also requires developing strong communication skills.
According to data from the Brandon Hall Analyst Group (BHAG) even the most talented, best-intended leaders fail when there’s no accountability. Why? Because accountability directly impacts performance. What’s promising though, is accountability is a skill that can be developed. So, as you strive to make advances in your leadership journey, the BHAG suggests these 4 strategies to becoming more accountable:
1. Honesty: Often this requires setting aside personal pride, admitting your own mistakes, and being completely honest with yourself
2. Owning Your Mistakes: Accountable leaders voluntarily say, “I’m sorry” when something has gone awry and they are responsible for the wrongdoing
3. Ask For Help: Seek input from others – bosses, peers, direct reports, friends and partners – about how something that didn’t go so well could have gone better
4. Manage Expectations Responsibly: Accountable leaders do not avoid responsibility, they do not procrastinate, and they do not under or over commit
Keep these tips and information handy as I’m sure they will serve you well this semester and beyond.
Best wishes for a productive school year,
The National Society of Leadership and Success

- By Marcel Schwantes Founder and Chief Human Officer, Leadership From the Core
Leaders of companies big and small are always looking for ways to better communicate with their employees. A major question I am often asked is what is the best leadership style for engaging employees.
While opinions espoused by thought-leaders may differ, it does spark a deeper conversation into identifying your leadership style to determine how your style affects daily communication with your colleagues.
