TAMU-CC Chapter Member Among 20 Finalists In NSLS ‘United by Purpose' Challenge

When it comes to resources that can change lives, scholarships are among the most impactful. Twenty-four-year-old Katarina Chapa Garcia is one of 20 finalists across the country, hoping to win one of three 'United by Purpose' scholarships provided by The National Society of Leadership and Success, among the more than $350,000 we award in scholarships each year.

Garcia, a graduate of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, recently shared with the Corpus Christi Caller Times that she's been applying for various scholarships recently in efforts to fund a passion project to help others. Having herself once been jobless and suffering depression during pregnancy while still attending college, Garcia's dream is to begin a nonprofit that will assist other women in similar situations.

"Over the years, I've been applying and applying to different scholarships in hopes that I can finally get the funding to start it off from the ground and just get going," Garcia said.

Garcia is grateful for the therapy and treatment she received for postpartum depression. "When I got that help, it really empowered me to share my story," she explains. It made all the difference in the world and allowed her to reclaim her mental health.

Garcia's nonprofit would give back, benefitting low-income women with limited resources — a group particularly affected by postpartum depression. Scholarship winners will be announced on March 12, 2021, with first-, second-and third-place recipients receiving $10,000, $5,000, and $2,000.
