In a world where every small act of kindness can ripple into significant change, the stories of those who lead by example are invaluable. The actions of others can often spark our own motivation to contribute to our communities, showing us that we all have the power to make a difference.
Building a Better World
At the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), our mission is to build leaders who strive to create a better world.
With over two million members across more than 800 college campuses, our members are actively engaged in making positive impacts in their communities. Their dedication and passion for volunteerism are at the heart of our organization’s mission.
Volunteer Inspiration from NSLS Members
We’ve gathered some of the most inspiring stories, advice, and quotes from our members about their volunteer experiences. Let their words encourage you to take the next step in your volunteer journey and make a difference in your community.
How has the NSLS helped you make a difference in the world?
"(The) NSLS has helped shape up my nonprofit by giving me the motivation, leadership skills, and determination to continue helping others through my nonprofit."
Brian D. Smith
Columbia Southern University
"The NSLS has empowered me to use our catering services as a vehicle for positive change in our community, fostering personal growth, and promoting the well-being of those we serve."
Maya Brooks
University of Phoenix
"The NSLS has given me the opportunity to lead community service events which make a difference in my community. Our Campus Beautification Project worked with college organizations in our community such as GreenKeepers and the Campus Programming Board to help clean and beautify our campus. Volunteers came together to pickup trash around the area and plant flowers."
Melanie Burrows
Spring Hill College
What are some of the skills you need to make a difference?
"In 2020, I started a non-profit organization for children in the foster care system. Some of the skills (I needed) were critical thinking and communication. It takes a lot to start a non-profit and to raise funds for it so those skills were definitely needed."
Crystal Bailey
Columbia Southern University
"For a little over two years now I have taken the initiative of hosting 12 step recovery meetings within my community three times a week. (I need to have) the ability to empathize with the individuals who are trying to overcome their struggles as well, as well as the abilities to communicate by talking and listening. The ability to develop a sense of trust is also important."
James Francis
New Mexico State University
"I volunteer for Dress for Success as a professional stylist. I style women who are going for job interviews by helping them put together a personalized clothing package consisting of two full professional outfits. (This requires) strong communication, interpersonal skills, creativity, adaptability, and attention to detail."
Barbra Chinomona
Western Governors University
What are your next volunteer goals and how do you plan on achieving them?
"I hope to endow the APO Eagles Leaders of Service Scholarship by completing our $50,000 goal by 2025. (I will) create innovative fundraising programs, where our donors feel they are getting value for their donation."
John Conover, Jr.
Columbia Southern University
"I plan to raise more awareness to continue to save animals in my community. I plan to use social media to raise awareness and plan adoption events. My ultimate goal is to be able to open up the Merced SPCA shelter building again which was closed down due to lack of donation funding so I can help more animals in need."
Lyric Anne Adam
Western Governors University
"I have volunteered to speak at one of the workshops hosted by our Dress for Success alumni group. I am excited to share my knowledge and experience on financial planning. I hope to volunteer as a speaker at more workshops in the future."
Donnette Burrows
Colorado Technical University
What advice do you have for someone hoping to make a difference?
"Even a single drop of water can carve out the Grand Canyon. Making a difference doesn't always involve grand gestures; small actions can significantly impact. Volunteering to support your community or donating to causes you cherish are meaningful. Flame a positive mindset and grasp life's joys. Simple acts of kindness can start a ripple effect while embracing diversity enriches everything. Remember, every forward step leads to positive change."
Hope Clippinger
Western Governors University
"Cultivate strong relationships with other organizations, community members, and stakeholders. Collaboration amplifies impact, as working together allows for pooling of resources, sharing of expertise, and coordinated efforts towards common goals."
Jeffrey Mbarushimana

"Every year we team up with Second Harvest Food Bank to help support Food Lion Feeds. Food banks are everywhere. You do not have to look very hard to find one. They all need help, so jump in and let’s all fight to eliminate hunger."
